I like to paint something beautiful yet imperfect, both of which mirror the essence of life and offer a quiet sense of comfort. Botanical art, in particular, brings me joy, as it allows me to observe nature closely and express my interpretations through form, colour, and detail. With over fifteen years of experience in botanical art, I continue to find meaning and fulfilment in portraying the botanical subjects with honesty.
I choose my subjects intuitively, often drawn to plants and flowers that evoke a sense of familiarity or emotion. My aim is to portray them with realism and accuracy, while keeping their character true to their kind. I enjoy blending traditional botanical techniques with modern materials and approaches, along with my own interpretations, which I believe lend my work a distinctive personal style.
I work from both live specimens, sketches and photographs, beginning with thumbnail sketches and a detailed pencil study of the chosen composition. This process helps me develop an intimate understanding of my subject before applying watercolour. Using a combination of layering, glazing, and dry-brushing techniques, I strive to create paintings that are not only precise but also aesthetically appealing.
I find it deeply fulfilling when people connect their own memories and feelings to my work, making it more than just a painting!
As the world of art is constantly changing with new technologies, mediums, and AI that can produce stunning visuals in an instant, I believe that there is no comparison to the work created by the feelings that surge through the heart; sensitive eyes that discern the colours and the skillful hands that bring them to life.
